Parang Rusak Motif in Inkscape

For the written Inkscape tutorial, I want to show you how to create Batik. Batik is the traditional of culture from my country, Indonesia., especially in the Java. It’s called Parang Rusak Batik. I am really love so much who people wearing the Parang Motif. It’s so beautiful. Now, we will be creating the using the Basic Shape like Polygon then adjust them with the Nodes Tool.

1. Design the First Ornament
Grab the Stars and Polygon tool in the tool box. Choose the Polygon mode, set Corners: 4 and Rounded of the Corners: 0,08 in the Control Bar. Just drag the Polygon (size doesn’t matter) and rotate the only one node handle like similar image below. Go to Object>Fill and Stroke (Shift+Ctrl+F). Set the fill color is #c87137dd.

2. Draw the Second Ornament
Pick the Freehand Lines (F6). Select the Bezier Path mode, set the Smoothing: 41. From the Fill and Stroke panel, choose the Stroke style option and the width is 1 px. You can draw what do you want not suppose to be like mine. On the Stroke Paint panel, set to no fill, and the stroke color is #35oa06ff. Then placing the lines above on the square shape. Draw a marquee to select two objects and group them. From the menu, Object>Group (Ctrl+G).
Edit>Duplicate (Ctrl+D). We will use it for the next step.

3. Draw the Third Ornament
Grab the Ellipse tool. Holding the Ctrl key and drag into your canvas area. Go to Path>Object to Path (Shift+Ctrl+C). Change all nodes into Make Selected Nodes Smooth. You just drag the handle to be a bit wider. Fill it with #ffeeaadd. Then duplicated it by Ctrl+D. We will use it for the next step.

4. Design the Fourth Ornament
Still using the Stars and Polygon tool, select the Polygon mode, set the Corners: 4. With the diamond shape selected by using the Select objects (F1), drag the bottom node a bit down (see picture).
Go to Path>Object to Path (Shift+Ctrl+C). Using the Nodes tool (F2), drag the left node a bit down and pull the right node a bit up. I change the node type to Make Selected Nodes Smooth.
For the top node I move the node to the left side and the bottom node move to right side. Click the nodes to Make Selected Nodes Corners in order to be pointed and please make sure change the nodes to Make Selected Nodes Smooth before.
The color is #ffeeaadd.

5. Design the Fifth Ornament
Here is go. It’s time for to draw Parang ornament. Correctly, if you see these ornament seems like the machete.
Let’s we draw it. Pick the Regtangle and Squares (F11) tool and then drag it. Go to Path>Object to Path (Shift+Ctrl+C). Adding some nodes into the regtangle shape. Change the node type become to Make Selected Nodes Auto-Smooth. After that I wanna polish the motif with Make Selected Nodes Corners.
I just play around the nodes to become the original of the Parang motif. Before created in Inkscape, I sketch up the Parang motif. How looks like the original of Parang Batik.

6. Arrange the Ornament
We will be putting all ornaments or motifs seems like image below. For the bottom circle, I make flipping. The copies circle I flip vertically then flip horizontally. In order to it’s not to be same with the other circle. Select all obejects, group them together by Ctrl+G. If you see your motif is become number decimals, we resize them to 100 pixel x 300 pixel.

7. Clone It
From the menu, Edit>Clone>Create Tiled Clones. Choose P1: Simple Translation form the drop-menu on the symmetry tab. In the Shift dialog, set Shift Y per column: -30 %. Choose the Rows and Columns: 5 x 7. Click on the Create button in the dialog. Move the original image out of the way. After that, select all objects. Group them by Ctrl+G.

8. Create the Background
Drag the regtangle tool. Create a square. Set its 600 x 600 pixel. Set the color is #2b1100ff. Go to menu Object>Lower to Bottom (End). This will be our base tile. Then right-click, choose Duplicate. We will make duplicate the background. It should be appear as top object and then give it the base color.

9. Clipping
Please selected the base square, the grouped clones and the top square using the Select Object (F1). Go to Object>Clip>Set to create the clipping.

10. Resize Your Motif
If your motif in decimal number in the control bar. Because it’s a separated, please (Ctrl+G) them. Then change its to 600 pixel x 600 pixel.

Conclusion
Finally, I made it. I take a long time for the experiment to creating the Parang Rusak Motif in the digital version.
